NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Friday morning a family of four found their SUV pinned underneath an 18-wheeler, an indication of how dangerous these holiday roads can be.
The family’s vehicle was caught under the big rig on Interstate 81 with four people, including two children inside.
“I’m jst glad everyone is alive,” says Scott Werner a witness to the accident. “It could have been a lot worse. It’s definitely a Christmas miracle, that’s for sure.”
“Thank God everybody is ok,’ said Anthony Januzzi the driver of the big rig.
The driver of this big rig was traveling along Interstate 81 northbound in Hanover township. It was just before the Nanticoke exit when he says he tried to pass the vehicle.
“I t looked like they ‘swish swaggled’ and next thing I know, they disappeared and were underneath my trailer,” Januzzi told Eyewitness News.
But he didn’t push the breaks in fear he would run over the vehicle trapped underneat.
Instead he lit this Kia SUV drag his 18-wheeler to a stop.
Within minutes, Scott Wener drove into a debris field that he says stretched nearly a half mile long.
“:I stopped and grabbed a blanket and my triangles,” he says. “I went up to the vehicle and saw on the side of the road he had his son on the side of the road here. So I grabbed my blanket, grabbed the kids and kept them warm while dad got mom out of the vehicle.”
No one was hurt, which even shocked first responders.
“I was kind of surprised to see that there was nobody really badly injured on this crash, Assistant Chief Dan Wegrzynowicz of the Hanover Township fire department. “Because south of this location here was a debris field that everybody was driving over and you could have got into an accident yourself as well.”
On the vehicle, an Ohio license plate. the family of four was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A Christmas miracle? We’ll let you decide.
