The annual Christmas in July Food Drive was once again sponsored by Eyewitness News and the Nexstar Media Group. This food drive brings awareness of the issue of hunger to those they may not impacted by, it and demonstrates that year around support is needed to eliminate hunger in northeastern Pennsylvania. The need is greater during the summer months when schools are closed and children miss out on meals that are provided through the free and reduced meal programs.
The summer months are traditionally slower times for donations because people are on vacation and organizations are closed. This food drive fills a vacuum that exists during this time of year.
Community support generated over 41,000 pounds of non-perishable items for the CEO Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. The food items will be distributed to agencies serving families throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. In July, $32,000 was raised for the fight against hunger which is used to purchase items to feed needy families and children. During the summer, while school is out, over 2,000 children are served healthy meals each day through the generosity of those in our community.
Attorney David Glassberg, Board Chair of the CEO Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, wants to thank Eyewitness News and the Nexstar Media Group for “reaching out to the community to provide the opportunity to donate food items or money. 100% of donations go to local families in need and helps fight hunger in our community.”
