Cheers! Susquehanna Brewing brings home a big award

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) A local brewery just took the international stage for one of its beers.  The Shady Spot Lemon Shandy.
Susquehanna Brewing Company won the gold at the 2016 World Beer Cup this week.
Eyewitness News Reporter Valerie Tysanner has a look inside the Pittston brewery – and how this big award is shaking things up.

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) The beer – has just been dubbed the best fruit beer in the world.
Susquehanna brewing company knew their “Shady Spot Shandy” was popular with customers.

“there’s one season you cannot rush in northeastern pa and that’s summer so people are always happy to see it come out we actually got it out a little earlier this year.” Said Fred Maier, SBC Co-Founder, Vice President

Not dreaming it would be wildly popular with critics too.
But the Pittston company’s lemonade infused ale took home the “gold medal” for the fruit beer category this month, at the 2016 world beer cup – known as the “Olympics of beer competitions.”

Beau Baden, Brewmaster told Eyewitness News “Theres a lot of effort that goes into making this beer and the flavors we get out of it that’s what sets it apart from all the others.”

Two thousand breweries from 55 countries submitted at least one beer for consideration.

“I had to watch it three times actually. I just thought no way. There are 6600 hundred beers are entered into it so its one of those things its fun to send in but you can’t expect much.” said Maier

Especially because, Fred Maier says, s-b-c has only been open for four years…
And many of its competitors have been open for decades.

“And brewers say what perhaps shot them to the top is the culture of innovativeness and trying things out here at sbc.”

SBC brewers… Inspired by the popularity of the Shady Spot Shandy are working on other summery beers.
After all flavor tweaking is the heart of the craft beer process.

You can try Shady Spot Lemon Shandy at the company’s tasting room – which officially opened with a ribbon cutting today.
SBC says they also plan to release a summery grapefruit beer sometime this summer.
