SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) A school in the Scranton School District has many reason to celebrate at its yearly family picnic.

This year along McNichols Plaza Elementary School received $90,000 in private grants to build a new playground, outdoor classroom, upgrade its garden, buy a smartboard, chrome books and more.

“Part of learning is learning how to play. So having that break to be able to go outside and utilize that space and get that physical activity in is really important for us,” said Principal, Mina Ardestani.

Mina and teachers wrote the grants to provide a better educational opportunity for its students.

The annual picnic brings the students back to the school in the evening with their parents or guardians. The school is giving thanks to them for their help and support. While also celebrating the students successful school year.

The school is trying to get another $50,000 to add to their new playground. You can visit the school’s Facebook page to cast your vote.
