Carbon County Children and Youth Services seeing more kids in crisis

JIM THORPE, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Across the commonwealth, children are being taken from their families because parents simply can't care for their children properly. Those children are being helped by local agencies, but as family problems continue to increase, so are the number of children needing help.

Children and youth services protects kids before birth and up to 18 years old. A caseworker's job is to investigate abuse and neglect within a home, then decide what to do next. These days - it's not an easy job.

"We've seen a huge increase in numbers here in carbon county because of trends happening right now in the world," Jill Geissinger, CPS.

From 2014 to 2018, the number of children helped by Carbon County's youth agency doubled.

That's a result of parents choosing drugs over their kids, unsecured guns in the house, and parents getting thrown in jail.

Four years ago, changes were made to the child protective services law after the Sandusky scandal. As a result, more cases of abuse and neglect are now being reported.

In 2014, Carbon County saw 878 children in crisis for the entire year. In 2017, it jumped to 1,712. So far into 2018, 890 boys and girls have gone through the system. .

"That's a pretty big number for just a few, six months of this year. And we expect that to double by the end of the year," said Geissinger.

To keep up with the rising numbers, Carbon County has hired more caseworkers, but its better parenting that's really the answer.

"What we're working on with the families is to empower them to do better," said Geissinger.

You can help children in crisis by volunteering with organizations like "Big Brothers, Big Sisters" or by becoming a foster parent.
