BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It was a scary scene in Columbia County as part of a building collapsed, causing debris to hit cars and injuring several people.
It all happened Wednesday afternoon near the corner of East Second and North Market Streets in downtown Berwick.
Berwick Fire Chief Randy Remphrey said the side of the building that collapsed is vacant and no one was inside at the time. Neighboring businesses were closed.
He’s estimating that seven people were hurt when debris fell onto the road and smashed two cars that were stopped at a red light. They were taken to a hospital.
People from all over the Columbia County community came to check out the scene, snapping photos of the broken glass, mangled metal, and piles of bricks.
This stretch of East Second Street is shut down until further notice as investigators try to figure out what caused the building to come down.
The clean-up effort is on hold until officials can get the permits from PennDOT on Thursday morning.
