BENTON, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – It’s an upcoming production that is both entertaining and educational – the Benton Area School District is preparing for the student production of “Newsies” the musical.
The show has been around for over a decade and is based on the real life newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City. The students in the cast mostly play gender neutral characters. Emily Lockard enjoys the artistic freedom.
“I like it because we can express who we are as a character more than anything. I think it’s good she’s [the director] letting us express ourselves,” Lockard, who plays Davey, said.
Students are in charge of every aspect of the show, including lights, sound, and chorography.
“I think it teaches them so many on going lessons for leadership and life. For the kids on stage, public speaking, being able to work collaboratively in a group,” Director Sarah Kay said.
The high school production is a little unusual because they are bringing elementary students in to help out with the production.
“It’s really fun because you know not all the elementary school kids get the chance to have this kind of an opportunity, so it’s cool being in something like this,” Wilmar Lewis, who plays Less, said.
The performances will be March 15th and 16th at 7pm and the 17th at 2pm.
