The memory of a fallen Pennsylvania Patriot was being honored through a day on the diamond. The Baseball for Bravery Tournament brought teams from across Luzerne County to the West Hazleton Little League Complex. Zachariah Barr first started the softball tournament as his senior project in high school to honor his cousin who was a soldier. Master Sergeant Paul Karpowich was killed in 2004 while on deployment in Iraq. The tournament raises funds for the MSG Paul Karpowich Foundation which distributes money to local soldiers who were injured at war.
Zachariah Barr explains why he wants to keep this an annual tradition, “Just to bring the community together, have a good, positive day. Have some fun, just positivity. There’s not much of that, that goes around in this town anymore so just to bring everyone together.” Barr says so many teams tried to sign up for today’s event that he had to turn away several. He plans to try and make this a two day tournament in the future.
