CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- About a dozen people were evacuated after a fire broke out at an apartment building in Carbondale.

The fire broke out on Belmont Street just before 9:00 this morning. Firefighters say the fire broke out at the back of the building.

The Carbondale fire chief says the building has six apartments inside. He says they made quick work of the blaze.

“Luckily we caught it while it was small,” says Fire Chief Chris Pezak. “Because this building is a huge building. We’ve got exposure issues on both sides so luckily it didn’t come to that.”

A fire marshal has been called in to search for a cause. Tenants will be allowed to return this afternoon.
