Hazleton, Luzerne County — A Luzerne County mother has made it her mission to spread awareness about autism.
Her goal to be “a voice for the voiceless” comes after a recent incident involving her toddler who has the disorder.
In a story you will only see on Eyewitness News, Katie Cotton was shopping with her children at a Wilkes-Barre Township store last Friday.
The Hazleton mother of four said her 2 1/2 year old son Gaven, who has autism and other medical problems, started to have a meltdown.
That’s when Katie said another customer approached them and referred to the toddler as the “r word”. Katie posted a video about her experience on Facebook, which has over one million hits so far.
Her 7-year-old son Keegan was also diagnosed with the disorder. She wants more people to learn the signs of autism and respect children who show those symptoms.
Katie started a Facebook page for Gaven. Click here to “like” the page.
