A Medical Miracle in Monroe County

News

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Exactly one year ago, the family of a dying man was told to prepare for the worst. But the Saylorsburg man beat the odds and survived, because of a miracle and a dedicated medical team.

Late at night on November 2nd 2016, Armand Llanes knew something wasn’t right. He was suddenly in excruciating pain, and felt like he was being stabbed with a knife.

“But then it became so intense, I collapsed to the floor,” Armand Llanes of Saylorsburg recalls.

His wife, Regina, called 911.

“I just wanted them to make him better, I didn’t know what it was,” she says.

EMT’s rushed Armand to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono. There, nurses broke the news to Regina that her husband was dying.

She says, “I was just broken hearted. Just, what would I do without him? We have children.”

When Dr. Zama heard what was happening, he left his house and hurried to the hospital.

Armand barely had a pulse, and was internally bleeding from a ruptured aorta.

“Which is one of the most serious emergencies in all of medicine,” explains Dr. Nche Zama, Medical Director of Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono.

His liver and kidneys were shutting down by the minute.

Dr. Zama adds, “chances of survival are slim to none. You’re a dead man walking.”

Yet, going into surgery, Dr. Zama and his team vowed to fight for their patient. After more than ten hours in the operating room, their determination paid off.

One year later, a now healthy Armand and his savior in scrubs have reuinted.

“On an emotional level it’s quite touching,” Dr. Zama says.

“I guess it’s a mixture of admiration and affection. He really is a remarkable man,” Llanes adds.

A devastating diagnosis turned medical miracle.

Blood donations helped save Armand’s life. During surgery, he needed eight liters to replace what he had lost. Doctors hope you’ll consider donating the next time a blood drive is scheduled in your neighborhood.
