A Day to SHINE

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) It was a special day today at a school in Luzerne County.   Congressman Lou Barletta paid a visit to Lee Park elementary school to meet with students who are part of the SHINE after-school program.

The program was first announced in December 2014 and opened its first after-school centers a year later in November 2015.

Shine now serves over 300 elementary- and middle-school students at 8 centers.

Ann Marie Mancione,  The SHINE Coordinator Hanover Area High School explained  "It's increased our attendance in a positive light. It's increased overall. It helps with their social skills and academic and emotional well-being."

SHINE combines the resources of local school districts and Wilkes University to provide special programs for students. Congressman Barletta worked with State Senator John Yudichak to start SHINE in Luzerne County.
