Spartan Race competitors Mark Veterans Day at Misericordia University

Misericordia University will celebrate Veterans Day 2017 with events on Nov. 9 and 10 designed to honor area veterans.

Veteran U.S. Army adaptive athletes SPC Jonathan Lopez and Retired Staff Sgt. Earl Granville will make a presentation on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall. The two appeared on the NBC television series Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge as part of Team Standing Proud.

Retired Staff Sgt. Granville was injured by a roadside bomb while on maneuvers in Afghanistan. SPC Lopez was injured in a motorcycle accident. Members of Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW), they will speak about overcoming physical and mental adversity. OEW is a volunteer organization comprised of current and former members of the military, family members and patriotic citizens dedicated to honor, empower and motivate wounded veterans.

On Friday, Nov. 10, a mural of photos featuring veterans associated with members of the university community will be on display from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of the Banks Student Life Center. The campus community submitted the photos.

Local veterans agencies, such as the Veterans Affairs Hospital and Team Red, White and Blue (Team RWB), will have informational tables and representatives to answer questions. Team RWB is an organization dedicated to helping connect American veterans to their community through physical and social activities.

The public is invited to participate and attend both free events. For additional information, please contact Lindsey Riddell, community outreach coordinator, lriddell@misericordia.edu, or call (570) 674-8041.
