LEHIGHTON, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Whether it’s the piano, horns, or wind instruments, this teenager with quite the musical mind wants to play them all.
Inside Lehighton’s ‘Carbon County Music and More,’ 13-year-old Zahmir lets his creativity shine.
Diakon’s older child matching initiative recruiter Marian Kolcun has worked with Zahmir for about two years and says it’s amazing to see his mind at work.
“He’s just got that natural talent for music and sound,” says Kolcun.
Zahmir may not talk much, but when it comes to expressing himself on the keys, he has plenty to get across.
“I think it’s kind of a coping mechanism for him,” says Kolcun. “Sometimes it’s a mood of enjoyment. Sometimes it’s exuberance.”
Zahmir has no formal training on the piano. Rather, he relies on his impressive ability to improvise.
But he strikes a chord in other areas as well. The owner of ‘Carbon County Music and More,’ Brad Cressley, gives Zahmir a hands-on look at some of the other instrument in the store like the trombone, saxophone, and snare drum.
His musical ability and willingness to learn leaves an impact on Cressley.
“He definitely has a knack for it,” says Cressley. “He knows what he hears and what he wants to create through his own music, which is really impressive to see.”
If he’s able to accomplish all that without ever taking a lesson, just imagine what the guidance of a family can bring him behind the keys and in life.
“I’m amazed with what he can accomplish in a short amount of time and what he can do,” says Kolcun. “I see that side of him, the potential that comes to the surface. You can only build on that. And a family would love that.”
