Novemeber 16 and November 17, 2013

 *The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, is inviting parishioners to unite with the sufferings of the people of the Philippines and Vietnam through a special collection to be taken up in parishes this coming weekend, November 16-17. The collection will provide financial aid to them in this time of devastation.

*The Lake Lehman Theatre Department presents- "Sleepy Hollow".  A family musical that is appropriate for all ages.  The curtain will go up Saturday, November 16 at 7 pm and on Sunday, November 17, at 2 pm.  The show will be at Lake Lehman High School in Lehman.  Tickets will be available at the door.  $8 for adults; $6 for students and senior citizens.

*Holiday Craft & Gift Fair on Sat. Nov. 16 from 9am to 3pm at the Chestnuthill Park located on Rt. 715, Brodheadsville.  The show is sponsored by the West End Park & Open Space Commission.

* The 2nd Annual Gospel Night Concert will be held at 1 Living Hope Community Church, at 36 Sterling Road, Newfoundland on Saturday, November 16. Feature Performers: Aziah Meadows, A.J., and Nadeen and The Full Gospel Assembly of God. It Starts at 5pm and food will be served.

*Making A Difference Ministries present National Artist Music Workshop on November 16, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. at The Music Scene 36 North Main Street Pittston, Pa. 18640. *The Fourth Annual Geisinger Turkey Trot 5K Walk and Fun Run will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16 at three locations.
The races will begin at Geisinger Medical Center, Hospital for Advanced Medicine (HfAM) in Danville; Nay Aug Park in Scranton and Geisinger-Gray's Woods in Port Matilda.
  $20 for day-of registration. . Proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit Children's Miracle Network at Geisinger.
The funds raised by this event will help to provide pediatric equipment, programs and services at Janet Weis Children's Hospital and throughout Geisinger Health System.

*The Tunkhannock Area High School junior and senior classes are holding a Powder Puff football game on Saturday, November 16th at 7 pm at Memorial Stadium in Tunkhannock. The game will benefit Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen, CEO, and Interfaith-- all Wyoming County charities

*There will be a benefit at Lakey's Banquet Room in Susquehanna, Pa. on November 16, 2013, Begining at 5pm, for the Slocum Family, who lost their home to a fire on October 24th. There will be Music by DJ Dirty Dave, Food, Door prizes, and a Chinese Auction.

*Saturday,  Nov. 16- 9:30 a.m. to noon-College basketball on wheels at The University of Scranton
The Byron Recreation Complex .  The event is to help raise awareness and support for those who have sustained spinal cord injuries, students from The University of Scranton, The Common Wealth Medical College, Misericordia University, and Wilkes University will complete in wheelchairs for a three-on-three basketball tournament that raises funds for Individual Abilities in Motion (I AM) organization.  The I AM organization is a volunteer-based organization in Lackawanna County that serves to discover, develop, and celebrate all abilities of those who have sustained spinal cord injuries.
  The event is open to the public and is hosted by The University of Scranton’s Physical Therapy Club

November 17

*Boy Scout Troop 98 is conducting a clothing drive collection  Sunday November 17th from noon to 3 pm. A truck and a table set up next to the main entrance of Brodheadsville Self Storage which is located at the end of Jena Drive, directly across from PV High School on Rt 115.  This clothing drive will help to defray the cost of taking 13 scouts on a high adventure trek to Maine next summer.

*Empty Bowls, an event to raise money for local food banks, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Wilkes University Henry Student Center second floor Ballroom. For a donation of $15, attendees will receive a handmade bowl with a serving of soup, bread and a drink. Children under the age of 12 are invited to attend the event for $5 and will receive a serving of soup, bread and a drink.

* The Wyoming Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking crafters for its 20th Annual Holiday Craft Show to be held during Thanksgiving weekend, November 30 to December 1, 2013 at the Armory in Kingston.  Proceeds from the event benefit American Red Cross programs and services in the Wyoming Valley. *The 7th Annual Sayre Turkey Trot 5K, sponsored by the Williams Auto Group and Dandy Mini Marts, will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28 at 10 a.m. The free
Online registration for the 5K event is now available at the Sayre Turkey Trot website – www.sayreturkeytrot.com – with an advance registration fee of $20 and day-of registration fee of $25. Turkey Trot Teams with up to five members may enjoy discounted registration of $18 per person in advance or $23 on race day. Advance registrations will be accepted until November 21 and will guarantee the first 450 5K participants a long-sleeve Technical Shirt

*Blood cancer support group meets Nov. 19 A support group for patients with Multiple Myeloma and other blood cancers will meet Tues., Nov. 19, at 5:30 p.m. at the Center for Cancer Wellness/Candy's Place, 190 Welles St., Forty Fort. This will be an open discussion meeting for patients and caregivers at any stage of progression, led by two survivors. Literature will be available and light refreshments will be served.

*In celebration of national Hospice month, AseraCare Hospice is hosting an Open House for the community on November 21, 2013 from 5-8pm. A special presentation will be made by Art Therapist, Teresa Toth along with opportunities to understand the power of Hospice and end of life issues. Refreshments will be provided. *Like music? Play an instrument? Like to sing? Then come on down to The Cooperage at 1030 Main Street in Honesdale for Open Mic Night on Wednesday, November 27th from 7:30 to 10:00pm. This acoustic-style open mic is hosted by Mike Jung. It’s is a fun evening for musicians and listeners alike. The board fills up quickly, so come early to sign-up! This is a donation based event and contributions are appreciated.

*Put on your dancing shoes and come out and dance! On Saturday, November 23rd there is a Contra Dance from 7:30 to 10:00pm at The Cooperage, 1030 Main Street in Honesdale. Contra dancing is fun for the whole family. It’s energetic and a great way to build friendships and create community.

* Smile! Photos will be taken with Santa Claus at Dino & Francesco's Restaurant in the Birney Plaza in Moosic  on Saturday, November 30 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm - Santa is welcoming both Pets and  Children for pictures. All pictures will be available the same day and are $10.00 per photo with proceeds benefiting Tracey's Hope Hospice Care Program and Rescue for Domestic Animals, Inc.  Pictures will be taken by Pixel Perfect Photography Studio. In addition to pictures there will be a Huge Bake Sale, A Basket Auction, and many raffles and prizes.

 *Thanksgiving Dinner For The Community hosted by the 1 Living Hope Community Church will be held on Saturday, November 22. Turkey and all the fixings, dinner will be served at 5pm at 1 Living Hope Community Church, 36 Sterling Road, Newfoundland. *Local artists are highlighting the beauty of the Susquehanna River Valley as part of an exhibit in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Center for the Arts through Nov. 26. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Members of the Susquehanna River Artists featured in the exhibit include: Robert H. Brown, Glen Klein, Bill Whitmoyer, Heidi Brandt, Dave Ashby, Pam Thomas, Annie Barnhardt, Abigail Kurecian, Gail Fox, Susan Fulginiti, Sara Mika, Larry Ney and Sara Baker. The Susquehanna River Arts exhibit is sponsored by the Columbia-Montour Visitor’s Bureau and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and noon to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

*On “Paint it Black” Friday, November 29, 2013 at 7:30pm, past and present students of the Uptown Music Collective will join forces to present “It’s Only Rock and Roll: A Tribute to the Rolling Stones.” The one night only concert event, to be held at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, is a celebration of the schools 20th major performance and will feature performances of some of the Rolling Stones’ greatest hits. The event is sponsored in part by General Cable and The Rockoff Family.  Tickets for the performance are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door Tickets are available at The Uptown Music Collective (848 West Fourth St., Williamsport) and The Community Arts Center Box Office (220 West Fourth St., Williamsport) as well as Alabaster Coffee (410 Pine Street, Williamsport) and K & S Music (1116 West Southern Ave, South Williamsport).

*A Free Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Saturday, December 8th from 2 to 6 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mahanoy City. Meal will include: salad,, spaghetti and meatballs, roll and butter, home-made dessert and beverage. A good will offering will be accepted. The Church is located at 400 East Mahanoy Street. Additional home-made desserts will be available to purchase at the dinner. Church is handicap-accessible.

*The 20th Annual Performance of "The Gift" presented by the Back Mountain Harvest Assembly.  Many families have made it their tradition to bundle up, bring some blankets and grab a cup of hot chocolate while they watch "The Gift". *Choral Arts of Luzerne County Presents "Sounds of the Season" . Three concerts are planned Performances will be held on Saturday December 14th at 7:30 pm at St. Stephen's Pro-Cathedral, 35 S. Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre and Sunday December 15th at 3:00 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 210 W Green St, Hazleton. For all concerts, tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets will be available at the door, may be purchased in advance from chorus members, or by sending a check payable to "Choral Arts of Luzerne County", and mailed to: 190 South Sprague Avenue, Kingston, PA 18704.

*Considered a master of the Irish narrative, storyteller Tomáseen Foley will offer the best of Ireland’s rich cultural heritage with an evening of Celtic music, song and dance when Misericordia University presents, “Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas” on Monday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Lemmond Theater in Walsh Hall.

*The Lackawanna Historical Society will kick off the holiday season with an open house on Friday, December 6 at 7 p.m. at our headquarters the Catlin House, at 232 Monroe Avenue. Wassail and sweet treats, stories and games will be part of this old-fashioned Christmas celebration. Brook Valley Farms will be on hand to offer horse-drawn carriage rides around the Downtown, and a special German toy exhibit will be on display as well.

*New Life Community Church, Celebrating two years in Hanover Township will host its second annualChristmas Concert  December 8, 2013, 7:00 to 8:30 PM. The concert will Feature Tenor Gideon Gaitano and the New Life Community Church Singers. Be inspired with well known heart-warming Christmas ballads, soaring vocal music, contemporary Christmas songs, a men’s ensemble and a friendly group of people. The concert will be held at New Life Community Church Sanctuary, 301 Delaney Street, Hanover Twp.

*Bring your pets and kids for adorable pictures with the Safe Haven Rescue Santa Claws on Saturday, December 7 from 10-2 at Berger's Agway, Route 209, Brodheadsville.
The pictures will cost $10, and make wonderful memories and Christmas gifts.
Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and find them loving homes. Shelter killing is the number one cause of dog deaths, and Safe Haven has saved over 600 lives so far.
Safe Haven Rescue needs Volunteers to help with Adoption Days, fundraising, transporting dogs to vets and groomers, and Fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever homes
