#TeamKayla Benefit at Carbondale Area High School

On October 8th, a fundraiser will be held on the Carbondale Area High School campus to benefit Carbondale native Kayla Nakonechni
Carbondale, PA - On October 8th, local businesses Pieroguys Pierogies, What the Fork Food Truck, and Burnt Carbon will hold a fundraiser on Carbondale Area High School’s campus to benefit Carbondale native Kayla Nakonechni. Nakonechni, a senior at Penn State University was recently diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer.

October 8th is National Pierogi day and in celebration of this event, Pieroguys Pierogies (a successful Kansas City based product owned by Carbondale native, Frank Gazella) will release a new pierogie flavor, alongside the highly successful What the Fork food truck. What the Fork was recently voted the second best food truck in America on the morning show with Michael and Kelly.

A portion of What the Fork’s profits and all other funds from the event will be donated to the Nakonechni family. The event will feature lunch and dinner service from What the Fork food truck, the launch of Pieroguy’s Pierogies new flavor, face painting by the Carbondale Area cheerleaders, an acoustic performance by Graces Downfall, and many surprises. The public is encouraged to visit the food truck during its time at Carbondale Area, which is located right along Business Route 6.

Pieroguys and What the Fork reached out to Joe Caviston (formerly of Eleanor Rigby’s night club) to help with promotion and entertainment for a product launch. Caviston immediately suggested turning it into a benefit for Nakonechni. Upon learning of the situation and reading Kayla’s blog, “Life’s Tough, But I’m Tougher,” Gazella and Mario Bevilacqua (of What the Fork) were excited to contribute to such a worthy cause.

“It was sort of a no brainer when the guys approached me. I’ve known Kayla most of her life; he brother is one of my best friends. As soon as I heard of the situation, my mind immediately when to, ‘What can I do to help,’" explained Caviston.

Gazella who recently relocated back to Carbondale to oversee the expansion of Pieroguys into the North East market, expressed his excitement for the event, “#TeamPieroguys is humbled to be part of such a great cause, with great organizations and local businesses! We're happy to help give back to the local community! Coming together as one and lending a helping hand is what life is all about. #TeamKayla is a team we want to be on!”

Katie Graziosi of What the Fork added, “#TeamFORK is thrilled to be part of such an amazing event. The community involvement and camaraderie surrounding the event for #TeamKayla is truly humbling.”
