Misericordia University presents Trustee Associates Award to Tambur family and Family Found
The Misericordia University Board of Trustees honored the philanthropy of the Tambur family and their Tambur Family Foundation by presenting them with the 2013 Trustee Associates Award on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Trustee Associates Gala and Inauguration Celebration. The gala was one of numerous Inauguration Week events held to recognize Thomas J. Botzman, Ph.D., as the 13th president of Misericordia University.
Trustee Award recipients Robert L. Tambur, his wife, Virginia, and their children, Robert Tamburro and Liza Tambur-Rolland, have supported higher education and health care initiatives in northeastern Pennsylvania with their own entrepreneurial spirit and generosity through the Tambur Family Foundation. In April, the campus community and the family came together to officially dedicate Tambur Field, the home of the Misericordia University Cougars baseball team. The $520,000 ballpark is located on approximately four acres of land adjacent to the John and Mary Metz Field House in the Anderson Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Construction of Tambur Field took about 10 months to complete, from the clearing of a wooded area to the final laying of sod. The playing surface contains a special fescue blend. It was purchased from Tuckahoe Turf Farms of Hammonton, N.J., which also installed the turf. Tuckahoe Turf Farms has provided playing surfaces for numerous professional and collegiate ballparks and football fields, including Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Field, Fenway Park, Citibank Park and many other facilities.
Tambur Field also features an electronic scoreboard in straightaway left field, an irrigation system, sprinkler systems, individual bullpens for the home and away teams, as well as dugouts for the teams and bleachers for the fans.
“We are proud to be able to support Misericordia’s mission of providing quality academics, service leadership and professional preparation to its students,’’ said Robert L. Tambur. “We are honored to be named the recipients of the Trustee Associates Award. It has been our pleasure to work together with so many wonderful people at Misericordia and in northeastern Pennsylvania to make our community a better place to live.”
The Trustee Associates Award is given annually to friends of the University who have demonstrated outstanding dedication, service and generous support to Misericordia University.
“The Tambur family’s dedication to their community and to the mission of Misericordia University is commendable,” said Thomas J. Botzman, Ph.D., president of Misericordia University. “They generously have supported our University with their time, talent and treasure. The family’s example of ongoing support is one we hope will be emulated by future generations of students, who can use their Misericordia education for the betterment of their communities and humankind.”
Robert Tamburro has shared his expertise and offered guidance as a member of Council Misericordia, a key outside advisory group, since 2003.
In 2005, the family created the Tambur Family Foundation, which generously supports the endeavors of many nonprofits and institutions in the region. The National Philanthropy Day Committee of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter (AFP NEPA), presented the family and the foundation with the Outstanding Philanthropists Award in 2010. Through their family foundation, the Tamburs have supported numerous capital campaigns and worthwhile initiatives on campus to ensure that a Misericordia education is accessible to all students.
