Staying Safe on Craigslist

Experts offer advice on staying safe while on-line
Monroe County-A computer crime expert is warning people to be cautious when they agree to meet someone from the popular website Craigslist.
Two recent violent crimes in our area have a connection to Craigslist.
A murder in Northumberland County and a robbery that led to murder in the Poconos.
While Craigslist can be a very effective way to buy things or meet people.. it has also been used by others to lure potential victims into crime.
Computer Crime Expert Luzerne County Detective Chaz Balogh offered this advice

"I think the first thing you try and do try and verify the person's name and location. A lot of the people doing fraudulent sales on Craigslist don't want to talk.."

Detective Balogh says never go alone to meet up  with anyone you connected with on-line..or meet in a public place.

Eyewitness News Reporter Sharon Gaeta learned a valuable lesson after  she found and rented an apartment she saw advertised on Craigslist.  Her apartment was ransacked shortly after she moved in --by someone allegedly connected to the person who ran the Craigslist ad..

"Looking at it now I definitely would run a background check and they're s easy now you can go online so cheap.." Sharon told the I-Team's Andy Mehalshick.
