“Pierogie Hockey Slapshot Challenge” and the “Pierogie Eating Contest”

Pierogies will once again be flung and eaten at Funfest this year
Hazleton, Luzerne County-Pierogies will once again be flung and eaten at Funfest this year.  The Funfest Committee has announced that the “Pierogie Hockey Slapshot Challenge” and the “Pierogie Eating Contest” will both return to the schedule of events for the festival. The Pierogie events will both take place on Funfest Saturday, September 7 at the Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania Stage near Broad and Pine Streets, and are made possible by event sponsors T&L Pierogies and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
“The Pierogie Hockey Slapshot Challenge is one of the most unique contests around and we are happy to be bringing it back for its 7th annual event,” said Pierogie Contest coordinator Mike Sosar. “Each year we get a great number of hockey fans who want to try the challenge, and it makes for an entertaining event.”
In the Slapshot Challenge, which begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Blue Cross Stage, contestants ages 12 and under are required to hit a frozen pierogie into a net using a hockey stick. Each contestant will get two shots, and those who do the best will move on to a second round.  The top twelve contestants will then compete for top honors. Prizes will include Penguins clothing, other merchandise, and tickets for the team’s upcoming season. There is no cost to enter, and contestants will get to sample the cooked version of T&L’s Pierogies, thanks to the sponsor, who will be on hand to serve.  The Penguins will have a booth to distribute information about their upcoming season.
Those interested in signing up for the Slapshot Challenge should report to the Blue Cross Stage by 11:00 a.m. Saturday.  Registrations will be limited.
Immediately after the Slapshot Challenge, the 6th annual Pierogie Eating Contest will be held, and is open to the public.    “The challenge is to see how fast you can eat a given amount of pierogies.  The competition has been fierce in the past, and we expect to see a lot of pierogie-lovers signing up this year as well.”  The Pierogie Eating Contest begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Blue Cross Stage, and anyone looking to enter can sign up at Funfest Headquarters, or at the stage before the competition.  Entries may be limited.  All pierogies will be provided by sponsor T&L, who will also provide prizes for the winning team.
Sosar offered thanks to Tom and Theresa Lonczynski, owners of T&L, and to the Penguins.  “Funfest involves many unique events and activities, but nothing has really come to define us as much as our pierogie wars, and we couldn’t have made them possible without the support of these sponsors.”
