Montage Mountain Opens for the Season

After more than $3 million in renovations, the new Montage Mountain ski resort officially opened for the season Friday.
Ski resorts across the region are looking forward to the potential snowfall expected Friday night.

Montage Mountain in Lackawanna County opened its doors for the first time Friday morning and workers are hoping the weather will give them a boost.

Ski and snow-enthusiasts started filling the mountain around 9:00 AM despite rain that was falling.

"It's opening day. It's the funest," Jerome Steligo of Wilkes-Barre said.

"I've been the other places but obviously the first time up here, opening day, I just wanted to come and check it out," Andy Lenkofsky of Plains said.

This year, visitors will have a lot of new things to check out.

There have been more than $3.5 million in renovations, including both the ski lodge and bar which were completely redone.

"When they walk in, it definitely has the WOW factor," Director of Operations Jessica Kalinoski said.

A new building was also built for rentals and shopping.

There's also a new groomer for the slopes and 280 new LED lights on the mountain itself.

"I just think having a nice lodge just makes the day a lot better," Antonio Frankelli of Bear Creek said.

"It's so much better. It's just a better environment," Steligo said.

In the past, the resort has struggled financially.

It now has new owners who brought the old name "Montage Mountain" back and they say they're committed to making sure guests have a good time.

"We're marketing to about a 45-minute radius for the most part. We've made our way down to Lancaster and Lansdale and that area for ski expos but we feel that this is home to the people of this area and they genuinely love this place," Kalinoski said.
