JCPENNY CLOSURE AT LAUREL MALL NEAR HAZLETON CAUSES CONCERN FOR FATE OF MALL

Word of the closing of the JCPENNEY Store inside the Laurel Mall near Hazleton has raised concerns about the future of the mall.

The JCPenney store inside the Laurel Mall near Hazleton will close its doors forever in early May- Company officials say it's one of 33 stores nationwide that will close as part of a cost-saving measure-2000 employees will lose their jobs including 50 at the Laurel Mall store--Ammee Reusing, manager of the mall said, "We are not surprised by the closing since we expected something was going to happen but the timing does surprise us since we thought it might happen next year-but we are talking to several retailers about the space and are cautiously optimistic we will have an exciting new store in there--" Laurie Veet who manages the Cigar Box next to JCPenney said, "It will impact our business since we share many of our shoppers-but I'm sure we will get a new neighbor that will bring new life to the mall-" Shoppers like Len Logudic from Hazleton added, "I'm not surprised since I walk in the mall everyday for the past 6 years and I never see anyone shopping-"--- Tammy Lescowitch from Weston told this reporter, "I think the store was slipping in customer service and quality--I think the company self-destructed-"
