Good News For Volunteer Firefighters

They won't be included under the employer health care coverage mandate of the Affordable Care Act.
Girardville, Schuylkill County -- Volunteer first responders won't be included under the employer health care coverage mandate of the Affordable Care Act.

Previously, volunteer first responders would have been considered full-time employees, which would have required the fire companies to provide health insurance for them.

U.S. Representative Lou Barletta generated support for the Protecting Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act.

The Internal Revenue Service said the problem will be addressed, and volunteer fire companies will not be required to provide health care coverage to their members.
