Fencing Now Part of Sports Program

Gillingham Charter School Offers the Only Fencing Program in Schuylkill County
“Fencing is an expensive sport,” said Christie Werkheiser, Director of Organizational Development for Gillingham Charter School. “
Thanks to a $320,000 grant with $30,000 for Gillingham’s athletics program, the charter school will be able to introduce its students to fencing in addition to its archery and basketball teams.  The sport will begin as a club for grades nine through 11 and eventually become a competitive sport.  On Wednesday, September 18, a coach from Schuylkill County along with a colleague from Virginia will be visiting Gilligham Charter School to demonstrate the sport of fencing and gain interest amongst students.

“Fencing is an expensive sport,” said Christie Werkheiser, Director of Organizational Development for Gillingham Charter School. “With this grant, we’ll be able to give our students a unique opportunity that other schools do not offer.”
