Doctors Call This One of the Biggest Health Risks of our Time

Antibiotics aren't helping infections they used to cure.
East Stroudsburg, Monroe County – Doctors say we are facing one of the biggest public health
risks of modern times. It stems from the overuse of antibiotics.

Doctor Susheer Gandotra is worried antibiotics are losing their power. He remarked, "It
is one of the most pressing public health problems at this time."

Gandotra is the Director of Infection Control at Pocono Medical Center. He explained
people around the world have used antibiotics when they didn’t really need
them. That has lead bacteria to develop resistance." The simple infection
which used to be treated with antibiotics a decade ago or two decades ago are
turning out to be more and more complicated. They are not being cured by oral
antibiotics,” he warned.

When oral antibiotics don’t work, some people have to be admitted to the hospital to
get the drugs through an IV. Sometimes that’s not even enough. Gandotra said, "Sometimes
we end up having no antibiotic option for them. And it is becoming a scary
situation."

There is something you can do to help. Only use antibiotics when you really need
them. That’s when you have a bacterial infection. They don’t work to stop viral
infections. Doctors can usually tell the difference. "Let the Dr. decide
whether you need antibiotics or not. But certainly pressing the Dr. for antibiotics
is not a good idea,” said Gandotra.
