WWII Veteran Stanley Sones Honored

A World War Two veteran is being honored for his service to our country 70 years later with a Purple Heart Eyewitness News Reporter Valerie Tysanner was at the moving ceremony on Wednesday in Lycoming County
Lycoming County- His smile speaks for itself.  A man receiving recognition he's waited for most his life.

90 year old Stanley Sones is a World War Two veteran.
Gravely injured when a bomb exploded near him in France 70 years ago.

"He was just holding up those defensive lines so there was no penetration into our territory." Stanley's daughter Edie Perritt told Eyewitness News.

Two men nearby were killed immediately.
Stanley was sent to the hospital where he remained for nearly two years.
Doctors working furiously to save his leg.

Seventy years later... The Hughesville native is being awarded with a Purple Heart...
A humbling experience for Congressman Tom Marino.

"It's rewarding to actually pin a Purple Heart or a medal on a veteran"

A token of thanks for Stanley's service to our country.
One Stanley never thought he'd see in person.
His daughter Edie told Eyewitness News

"He said to me one day he says Edie you don't get your Purple Heart until you die. And I said dad that doesn't seem right."

Unfortunately... Veterans like Stanley slip through the cracks far too often.
Many never have the chance to go through the award ceremony.
It boils down to communication. Or lack there of.

"He was an individual that was wounded in the hospital, left the hospital and came back home. He didn't go back to his unit, the paperwork wasn't done til he got out of the military."  said George Heiges of the Lycoming County VA

"History is dying before our eyes and it's just nice for me to see my dad be able to take his little piece of history." said Edie

Congressman Marino says if any veterans have issues getting medals or benefits to call his office.
He works closely with Veterans Affairs Departments in multiple counties.
