Woman Killed in Car Wreck Involving Police Officer

A woman died after the car she was riding in was hit by a Nesquehoning Police Officer's car Monday evening.

Nesquehoning, Carbon County - A woman died after the car she was riding in was hit by a Nesquehoning Police Officer's car Monday evening. State police say Carola Sauers, 69, was a passenger in a car that was hit by Officer Stephen Homanko's patrol car.

Troopers say Homanko, 25, lost control on State Route 209 in Nesquehoning  and hit Sauers' car, driven by Michael Sauers, 64.

Carola Sauers died at the hospital. Michael Sauers and Homanko were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

State police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Investigators are looking into whether the officer was involved in a pursuit at the time of the wreck.
 
Police say at the time of the crash, Officer Homanko had his lights and sirens on.
The road way was closed for nine hours while crews investigated.
