Wilkes University Accepting Applications for Doctor of Education Degree

Wilkes University, one of Pennsylvania’s leading providers of advanced education for teachers and school administrators, is now accepting applications for the doctor of education degree program. Students will be accepted for classes that start this fall.

Designed for educators who want to advance their teaching career or take on an administrative role, the Wilkes Ed.D. combines theory and applied research in a mentoring atmosphere. The program is appropriate for professionals in kindergarten through 12th grade or in higher education settings.

The 60-credit program includes specializations in educational leadership and kindergarten through 12th grade administration. The K-12 administration track leads to a superintendent’s letter of eligibility if the student holds a Pennsylvania administrative or supervisory certificate at the time of admission. The educational leadership specialization offers concentrations in educational technology, curriculum and instruction or educational leadership studies.

“Our faculty offer an impressive balance of empirical and practical experience from which doctoral students can benefit,” said Rhonda A. Waskiewicz, interim dean of the school of education. “We pride ourselves in our ability to provide a strong academic environment that is enhanced by practice.”

“The doctoral program offers educators the chance to reach the highest level in their field in terms of both leadership and scholarship,” said Mary Kropiewnicki, chair of the doctor of education program.
The program combines face-to-face classes and online learning. Its cohort format builds a support network of faculty and peers, allowing participants to complete the program with the same student group.
Those who successfully complete 12 to 18 credits per year can complete coursework in four years, followed by dissertation development. Accepted students may transfer 12 post-master’s credits toward the degree if prior coursework aligns with the curriculum in their chosen area of study.

The fall application deadline is May 1, 2014. Classes start in September. Applicants must have a master’s degree in education or a related field and take the Graduate Record Examination. Prior scholarly work and writing samples are also required, as well as an interview with program faculty.
