West Pittston, Luzerne County- Books, DVDs, magazines and . . . seeds?  The West Pittston Library’s Seed Library begins on Wednesday, March 19, 2014.  Over the past few years, seed libraries have been “sprouting up” across the United States and the West Pittston Library is happy to offer this free service.

Patrons may “check out” up to three seed packets the same way one would check out a book with one difference: “Instead of books, which are food for the soul, we are offering food for nourishment,” according to Jen Moran, Adult Programming Coordinator. Patrons will take home their choice of seed packets, plant as many seeds as they wish, grow great food, harvest the seeds from the food they have grown and then in November return the harvested seeds as well as any remaining seeds from the packets.

“We offer a great selection of books, eBooks, DVDs and magazines, but we are also a valuable community resource” states Moran.  The library offers entertaining and educational programming for adults and children on a weekly basis and offering a seed library is another opportunity to connect with members of the community.

According to Moran, “we are hoping to promote sustainability in our community as well as to encourage gardening for people of all ages.”  Educational material is available for those who are new to gardening as well as information as to how to properly harvest seeds.  To correspond with the launch of the seed library, Justin Naylor of Old Tioga Farm, Stillwater, was at the library on Thursday, March 20 to discuss Organic and Sustainable Living.

The library was able to implement the seed library through generous donations from the community as well as corporate donations.
