The Waverly Community House is pleased to announce a new series of classes designed to help hearing children communicate using sign language. The Baby Signs Sign, Say & Play program is especially useful in developing communication skills with children. The Baby Signs program for hearing babies has been bringing powerful, research-proven benefits to babies and their families around the world for over 25 years. The Baby Signs Program reduces tears, tantrums, and frustration, makes learning to talk easier, boosts self-esteem and self-confidence, stimulates intellectual development, and strengthens the parent-child bond.
This is a series of six theme-based classes (bedtime, bath time, mealtime, getting dressed, at the park, and pets) offered over a six-week period, with 45-minute sessions designed for parents and babies to attend together. The Baby Signs class is for parents and their babies ages 6 months to 4 years. A total of 37 useful signs are taught through fun songs, books, and activities. In addition, parents learn simple ways to support their baby's intellectual development ― tips drawn from Drs. Acredolo and Goodwyn's second parenting book, Baby Minds: Brain Building Games Your Baby Will Love.
The classes are held on Thursdays, beginning September 26th in the Scout Room. Two sessions (both covering the same topics) are offered for your convenience. Session 1 is from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Session 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The instructor, Rachel Dwyer, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and a Masters of Education in Special Education. She is a Baby Signs Program Independent Certified Instructor and is experienced in various aspects of special education.
