Some Say Protective Fencing Along I-80 Is a Good Idea

A woman injured in rock throwing incident.
Union County- This isn't the first time a rock thrown from a highway overpass has critically injured someone driving below.
But for a lot of people in Union County -- this is the first time it's hit so close to home.

"Oh my God I thought it was horrible. I felt so bad for the people. I've heard about that --not off that bridge but i've always heard about kids throwing things." said Mary Martini of Watsontown

Since last week's tragedy on I-80... Penn DOT has been quietly discussing whether steps should be taken to prevent this... from happening again.

" It's... It is hard to imagine people would do something like that." noted Sandy Tosca of PennDOT

Two teens were able to throw a large rock off the overpass hitting 52-year old Sharon Budd inside her car... Because until now, there was no reason to believe it needed protective fencing.

"When there are typically sidewalks on bridges, highly urbanized areas, those are typically the cases we look at where protective fences would be warranted." added Tosca

While the news is disturbing PennDOT representatives say they're not making any hasty decisions about what could happen to our overpasses."

But people who live in the area say installing protective fencing would help... Prevent another tragedy from happening.

PennDOT is waiting for State Police to file an official report before making the decision to add the fencing.
