Proposed Gun Range Near Hazleton Cause of Concern

The developer says it is safe- Neighbors are very concerned
West Hazleton, Luzerne County- A  building on Lehigh Valley Drive in West Hazleton  could  soon be home to an indoor shooting range--gun store and repair businesses. Developer Dan Basala says it will be a state of the art facility and very safe..

"I want the residents of Hazle Township and West Hazleton to know this is a safe facility."

Basala says there are no windows in the building and the it will be reinforced to prevent any possibility of bullets exiting the building..

"There's a steel plate 12 inches of concrete wall behind that with a 36 inch concrete block--it's not getting through.." said Basala

But many Residents who live near the proposed shooting range fear that accidents can happen..especially with the West Hazleton Elementary-Middle School and Youth Baseball fields about 700 feet away

.Peter DeMarco is head of the West Hazleton Baseball Association and president of the school's PTA

"Im looking at common sense factor when we have school with metal detectors this year,  armed guards.  We have baseball fields- 200 kids at the field and families at any given time at the fields.  Chidlren from school when they are in school use it for recess."

Neighbors near the proposed site echoed those fears..

This story is taking a strange  turn...it was approved by the Hazle Township Zoning Board two weeks ago..but now there is a question if that zoning decision should  have been made by West Hazleton..since 80 percent of the building is located in West Hazleton Borough..
