Price of Bacon Sizzles

One of the main ingredients of your favorite summer sandwich, the BLT, is getting a little more expensive.
Olyphant, Lackawanna County - One of the main ingredients of your favorite summer sandwich, the BLT, is getting a little more expensive.  Bacon prices are on the rise.  Last year at this time bacon was around $4 a pound, this year it's closer to $6 and is expected to climb another dollar per pound by August.

Tom Bosak, of Bosak's Choice Meats in Olyphant, has been in the bacon business for nearly 40 years and he's never seen the breakfast food climb this high.  The main reason for the hike is a shortage of hogs since the beginning of the year, but Bosak says that's not the only contributing factor to the jump in price.  Every year summer cook outs drive up the cost as well.

"All the price of pork has gone up, pork flat ribs have gone up, baby backs, our pork for our kielbasa have gone up, but not as high as the bacon has gone up.  The bacon has just gone up out of the water," explains Bosak.  The sale of bacon at Bosak's slowed down slightly because of the hike, but most customers looking to sizzle up a pound or two of bacon say it's just too good to pass up.

Bosak says prices should go down slightly come the fall.
