Police: Woman Drove A School Bus Drunk

Police believe Jennifer Watson was drunk when she drove a handful of students with the Benton Area School District home on Wednesday.
Benton, Columbia County - Bus number one represents a nightmare for a handful of students with the Benton Area School District.

That's because according to police 39-year-old Jennifer Watson drove that bus while she was drunk.
Police records indicate that while taking students home on Wednesday, Watson was cursing at the kids, swerving all over the road, and stopping at the wrong places.
Victoria Beck, a Benton resident, has three daughters. She said she feels fortunate that none of them were on the bus.

"Thank goodness," she said. "I wouldn't want someone like that driving my kids."

Police say students noticed something was wrong with Watson when she mysteriously turned the bus around in the middle of taking them home.

That's when the kids on the bus called the school for help.

Leslie Mestrow, a Benton resident, said her friends had children on the bus.

"One girl got off her stop two stops earlier just to get off the bus and get away," she said.

Watson is employed with Brewington Transportation, a local bus company which has a contract with the Benton Area School District. The owner of the company didn't want to go on camera, but he told Eyewitness News he saw Watson just hours before she got behind the wheel and he didn't notice anything unusual with her.

"I feel very blessed that my children were not on that bus," Mestrow said. "I think they children who were on that bus are also very blessed because none of them were hurt."

During an interview with police Watson denied consuming any alcohol that day other than having raisins soaked with gin for a headache.

Eyewitness News stopped by Watson's house Friday night, but no one answered the door.

The owner of Brewington Transportation told Eyewitness News Watson is no longer driving.

Police plan to formally charge Watson on Monday morning.
