Police: Suspect in Deadly Crash Was Drinking Behind Wheel

A Pike County man was arraigned Wednesday on charges he caused a deadly crash earlier this year.
A Pike County man is facing charges in connection with a deadly crash earlier this year.

Jonathan Woodruff turned himself in Wednesday morning at the State Police Barracks at Blooming Grove to face charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and several other charges.

State police say the Milford man had a blood alcohol content nearly four times the legal limit when he caused a deadly crash in March.

"He was spoken to at the scene and showed signs of intoxication at that time," Pennsylvania State Police Sergeant Brian Vennie said. "There was other evidence found in the vehicle that would cause intoxication and then eventually the blood results that came back."

The deadly crash happened on Route 739 in Delaware Township.

Patricia Edwards, 53, of Dingmans Ferry was returning home from a holy communion party when Woodruff's truck allegedly crossed the center line and hit her vehicle.

Edwards was killed and a passenger was seriously hurt.

"It's actually bad for three families in this case, the deceased operator, her seriously injured passenger and of course Mr. Woodruff's family who will now be forever changed," Sgt. Vennie said. "It also had an effect, probably, on everybody that drove by that scene including every first responder who was down there and witnessed that."

According to court documents, Woodruff admitted to drinking "Twisted Teas" while behind the wheel of his truck.

A search warrant indicates police retrieved seven empty bottles from Woodruff's truck.

"It's because of these indicents that we take such an aggressive approach on enforcing the DUI laws and especially with the holiday weekend approaching, we'll be out in even more force," Sgt. Vennie said.

Woodruff was arraigned Wednesday morning and is locked-up tonight on $25,000 bail. He is expected back in court later this month.
