Police Donate Books to Kids

The Cops and Kids program helps children get comfortable with police.

Tannersville, Monroe County – Northampton Community College’s Monroe Campus hosted a resource fair Thursday. Visitors learned all about services available in Monroe County. The booths included one called “Cops and Kids,” where families could get free books.

The Pocono Alliance is working with the Stroud Area Regional Police to give free books to kids. Pocono Alliance Development Director Roxanne Powell said, "[We are] trying to show the relationship that you can come and interact with us other than maybe a call or a situation that's not very good."

The program started when an officer in Wisconsin salvaged some books and handed them to children from her police car. Now, departments all over America give out stories. Parents and grandparents say it’s a great idea. Barbara Fox of Pocono Lake said, "They are so used to playing with the tablets and all these other finger games I call them and to sit and read a book I think is very important today."

As part of the program, police also go to schools and read to students.

If you want to donate books, you can drop them off at the Frailey Insurance Agency in Stroudsburg.
