East Stroudsburg, Monroe County – A bullet proof vest is one of the most important pieces of equipment a police officer needs. It’s also one of the most expensive. They cost about $1,000 each. Stroud Area Regional Police Lieutenant Kevin Transue said, "It's a reoccurring major cost every five years that with fundraising we keep that out of the budget which then helps keep our budget down, which then reflects in people's taxes."
Every officer’s vest must be replaced every five years. SARPD Lieutenant Jen Lyon explained, "After five years the material is not as effective. Hence, if you were shot while wearing a vest the bullet could penetrate through the vest and kill an officer."
Vest replacements cost SARPD about $80,000. The department is organizing a golf fundraiser to cover the cost. "We're trying to save some money out of the general budget so we can keep doing all the community events and good extra curricular things that we like to do and provide for the community,” said Lyon.
Officers are hosting the golf event at Fernwood Resort on Friday, September 12th. "This goes toward ballistic vests that your officers wear every day that will protect them, which ultimately protects you,” noted Transue.
The event will include awards, raffle, and a buffet lunch. "This golf tournament has been extremely successful. And I want to say thank you for the years past,” Transue said.
