New Playground For Children of All Abilities Opens

Children with special needs and typically developing children play together side by side at new park.

Tannersville, Monroe County – Children who have disabilities can now play at a specially designed park in the Poconos. The Crossing Abilities Playground recently opened at Mountain View Park in Tannersville. "It's incredible to watch kids play together without any limitations,” said Pocono Alliance Director Michael Tukeva.

The playground includes all sorts of features that all children, including those with special needs, can enjoy. There are things like a musical sound garden, and sensory activities. Even kids who have to stay in wheel chairs can enjoy the park. There are ramps all over the place that lead to fun games and even rides, like a moving boat.

Tukeva said, "We spent a year just doing research on what universal design and all inclusive play meant. We visited over 30 or 40 different playgrounds to find out what worked and what didn't." The Pocono Alliance worked with several local agencies and donors to raise half a million dollars for the project. "One smile from one child makes it completely worth it,” smiled Tukeva.
