New Life for Old Bar Building in Downtown Scranton

There is new life in an old bar building on Franklin Avenue as Ale Mary's gets set to open up Friday night.
From the Mall at Steamtown going into foreclosure to two major employers announcing plans to pull out of downtown Scranton, it has been a tough week for the city.

Despite all of the bad news, there is at least one positive.

New developments are happening in the Electric City and that includes one on Franklin Avenue.

After being closed for several years, the drinks will start flowing once again at the old Whistle's Pub building Friday night.

There is a new owner and a new name for the bar, Ale Mary's.

"We've been working on this for months and months," Karen Brazil said. "This building is incredible. Architecturally, it's just so beautiful."

Barbara Pappa of Dunmore used to come down when the old Whistle's Pub was in business and is happy the building is coming back to life.

"I think it would be great for downtown Scranton. We need some, pick-up down here," Pappa said.

The sports bar is just the beginning.

In about two months, owners expect to open a seafood restaurant right next to the bar and a few months after that, a 1920's speak-easy jazz club.

There is also construction upstairs in the Bittenbender Building as 21 new one-and-two bedroom apartments are under construction.

University of Scranton students Dallis Olson and Amanda Dezenzo are excited about the restaurant coming in.

"I like it anytime there's a new type of food, seafood is good, so I'm happy about it," Olson said.

"Me and Dallis all the time come down, get a meal, go out to dinner, we always try new things," Dezenzo said.

During a week when the economic news hasn't been the best in downtown Scranton, operators of Ale Mary's say they're glad to provide a little hope.

"We believe in the city of Scranton and we're investing in the city and looking forward to providing a great venue here for everyone," Brazil said.
