Benton Township, Lackawanna County - In his 28 years with the Fleetville Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Tony Saxton said he's never been called to Deer Lake for any problems on the water.

That changed Saturday night around 5:30 p.m. when crews were dispatched to the lake for a possible drowning.

"Upon arrival of other units they confirmed that there was someone in the water," Chief Saxton said.

Officials said it was 32-year-old Dwayne Ferguson from Baltimore, Maryland who was visiting a friend.

Chief Saxton said Ferguson he went out onto the lake in a kayak and decided to go for a swim.

Chief Bill White, with the Dive and Rescue Specialists in Scott Township, said friends told him that Ferguson wasn't a good swimmer. White told Eyewitness News that Ferguson wasn't wearing a flotation device.

"This is a situation where had the person had a personal flotation device we wouldn't have gotten the call and he would have been fine," White said.

Ferguson's body was found around 11 a.m. Sunday morning by crews using sonar devices.

Chief White said Muddy waters didn't make the search for rescue crews easy. He did say that witnesses who say Ferguson go under the water were able to help crews narrow their search.

"Our biggest problem was visibility," White said.

An autopsy is set for Dwayne Ferguson for Monday morning.
