MHKY: PSU Draws MSU, Edged in SO

Penn State picks up in conference point in second straight game.
UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY – Freshmen Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) and Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alta.) helped the Penn State men’s hockey team to a 2-1 second-period lead, but Michigan State netted a late third-period goal as the teams skated to a 2-2 draw at Pegula Ice Arena Friday night.
 
After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout with the Spartans (8-13-7, 2-5-6-4 Big Ten) earning the extra league point with the seventh-round victory. Although falling in the skills competition, Penn State (5-18-2, 1-9-1-0 Big Ten) collected a conference point in its second straight game.
 
Sophomore forward Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska/3g, 1a), who assisted on Richard’s power-play goal, extended his point-scoring streak to four games, while DeRosa (2g, 2a), redshirt junior Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif./3a) and redshirt sophomore Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn./1g, 3a) each registered a point in their third straight games.
 
Michigan State, which went 0-for-6 on the power play, out shot the Nittany Lions by a 34-27 margin. Penn State converted on 1-of-5 power-play opportunities, while sophomore goaltender Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) turned aside 32 shots for the second straight game. Michigan State netminder Jake Hildebrand made 25 stops.
