Hundreds Honor Fallen Schuylkill County Soldier

Hundreds of people came to honor Captain Jason Jones, a Schuylkill County native, who was killed in Afghanistan.
Pottsville, Schuylkill County - Lines wrapped around the First United Methodist Church in Pottsville Saturday with people looking to honor Captain Jason Jones.

"He was hardworking and fun loving," Jones' aunt, Jill Shulze said.

Captain Jones, a Schuylkill County native, was killed in Afghanistan on Monday.

"He sent some e-mails from Afghanistan that said we're making a difference and we're helping oppressed people," Shulze recalled.

Hundreds of people showed up to honor Captain Jones, who was just about to celebrate his first wedding anniversary.

Special Forces Captain Pete Van Hooser, who entered the military with Captain Jones, said he was someone he respected.

"The epitome of a brother and more importantly a warrior," Van Hooser said about Captain Jones. "He was a great leader and all his men loved him."

Van Hooser was a roommate with Jones for six years and he told Eyewitness News the two talked about the dangers of serving in the military.

"We both talked about it and we accepted it," Van Hooser said. "We knew it was worth the risks to protect the country."

Pictures of Captain Jones lined the entrance of the church and members of the Patriot Guard Riders stood outside and lined Market Street with American flags.

"The red, white, and blue is so important to this country and to those who served in the military," Douglas Kimbell, the Pennsylvania Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders, said. "It's our honor to be here to honor Captain Jones."

Relatives of Captain Jones said they're still hurting, but they told Eyewitness News that seeing the support and remembering the good times help with the healing process.

"Jason was fun," Jones' uncle, Jim Kabere, said.

Captain Jones body will be escorted back to Pottsville by the Patriot Guard Riders. Internment for Captain Jones will be held in West Point.
