Hiker Dies In Fall at Carbon County State Park

Officials with the Carbon County Coroner's Office say 20-year-old Jesse Crossley of Leigh County was killed when he fell off a trail at Glen Onoko Falls.
Lehigh Township, Carbon County - Glen Onoko Falls in Lehigh Gorge State Park is a spot first responders in Carbon County know all too well.

"I'm going to say a third of our rescues are generated here," Deputy Chief of the Jim Thorpe Fire Department, Vince Yaich, said.

A tragedy played out again there Monday afternoon.

Officials with the Carbon County Coroner's Office say 20-year-old Jesse Crossley of Leigh County died after a fall Monday afternoon.

Crossley was hiking with a group of friends when he fell just after 12 o'clock.

Initial reports indicated he fell about 25 feet into a bed of rocks.

Rescue crews say they got there as soon as they could, but there wasn't much they could do to save him.

"After a couple of minutes of CPR they pronounced him (dead)," Yaich said.

Yaich said the area Crossley was hiking is very dangerous. He said this isn't the first time someone died while hiking there.

"It's unbelievably dangerous at any given time," Yaich said. "It's constantly wet because you have the creek running. Rocks are all over growing with moss and trees are down."

There are signs warning potential hikers about the dangers.

Brandon Heydt, a Nesquehoning resident, has hiked the area his whole life. He said knows how tricky the terrain can be.

"People try to get onto the falls to close and they slip and fall," Heydt said. "It seems to be what happens from the top."

People on scene were upset and some held back tears as police carried on their investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

A New York woman died in the same area in August, 2013 when he also fell during a hike.
