Four Dogs Removed from Moosic Home of Cruelty Suspect

Moosic police seized four dogs from the Moosic home of John Tanis late Thursday afternoon after investigators believe he may have had more dogs that he was supposed to.
A man who is charged with animal cruelty in Lackawanna County is back in the headlines tonight.

Moosic police seized four dogs from the property of John Tanis in Moosic late Thursday afternoon.

Moosic police went to Tanis' Main Street home around 4:00 PM. They went there to see if he was illegally keeping more dogs on his property than he should have.

Eyewitness News was there as the four dogs were placed in the back of police cruisers.

Back in December, a Lackawanna County judge told Tanis that he was only allowed to have one dog as he was awaiting trial on animal cruelty charges. That order came after witnesses testified that dogs were escaping from Tanis' property and running out onto busy Birney Avenue in Moosic.

The four dogs seized Thursday will now be placed with foster families temporarily from Tracey's Hope, an animal rescue group based in Duryea.

Their spokeswoman says the dogs will have to be taken to the vet and checked for parasites.

"This has to stop. This has to stop. It's expensive. This has to stop," Denise Kumor with Tracey's Hope said. "He proudly thumbs his nose at the law and he just does as he pleases. It's not fair to the animals."

With the four dogs taken on Thursday, Tracey's Hope now has a total of 27 dogs that belong to John Tanis.

Tanis was at his Moosic home Thursday but declined to comment, telling Eyewitness News that his attorney has advised him to stay quiet.

It is quite possible Tanis could be brought before a judge for a bail violation hearing. There is no word when that could happen.

Tracey's Hope officials say they are in desperate need of donations to help care for the dogs. People can make donations at the Penn Security Bank in Duryea.
