Fast-Moving Fire Destroys Home in Dickson City

A fast-moving fire around 10:30 AM Wednesday morning destroyed the home of a brother and sister in Lackawanna County.
The smoke could be seen for miles away as a home was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning in Lackawanna County.

The fire caused quite a commotion in Dickson City and now the search is underway to try and pinpoint the cause of the blaze.

The fire in the 600-block of Morgan Street started around 10:30 AM.

Firefighters say when they got on scene the flames were so intense they couldn't even try to make an interior attack.

"It really went quick, really quick," eyewitness Donna Mill said. "I have no idea what could have started it. It was just really fast."

People stood in the street as smoke filled Morgan Street and firefighters tried to get the upper-hand on the fire.

"I was sleeping and I said to my boyfriend, I think it's pouring out. I ran to my son's room and I looked out the window and it was a big huge fire," neighbor Sharon Kowalski said.

The home that burned is a duplex.

It belongs to Barbara Brown and her brother Ted Tomko.

Neither person was home when the fire started and no one was hurt fighting the fire.

"The whole front of the building was fully involved," neighbor William Burdyn said. "It was fast."

Firefighters say they had power line problems right off the bat and there was nothing they could do to save the home.

"When we first pulled up, there was no chance right off the bat for an interior attack. We stretched some lines around and attempted to get in from the rear but there was just a lot of heavy fire," Dickson City Fire Chief Joseph Chowanec, Jr. said.

Neighbors say the fire victims were good people and they're sad that they lost everything.

"It's tough to see somebody's house gone, you know? What do you do now?" Burdyn said.

Dickson City firefighters will work with a state police fire marshal to try and determine exactly what started Wednesday morning's fire.
