Excitement Growing Around Firework Display

In late May Eyewitness News reported a story about the efforts of two teenagers in Schuylkill County to bring a firework display back to their hometown of Mahanoy City. Now the show is less than a week away and excitement for it is building.
Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County - It's been five years since Mahanoy City has had fireworks for their Independence Day celebration.

Teenagers Greg Merchlinsky and Tyler Cavenas raised enough money to change that this year.

"We're going to have a a ton of people sitting out here watching the fireworks," Merchlinsky said. "It's just a great feeling to know that there are going to be people here and they're going to have a good time because what we've done."

Merchlinsky and Cavenas both just graduated from Mahanoy Area High School. Over the last year they raised more than $6,000 for the fireworks which will be set off Saturday at the ball fields near the high school.

"It's been a lot of hard work planning and putting stuff together," Cavenas said. "It's going to feel amazing when it all comes together and actually happens."

Now that the day of the fireworks is less than a week away the teenagers are feeling the excitement surrounding the show.

"Just walking down (the street) I hear my friends talking about the fireworks," Merchlinsky said. "I hear elderly people talking about the fireworks. It's just amazing to see how everyone is just really excited for them."

David Truskowsky, who helps with the West End Fire Department in Mahanoy City, is one of those feeling the anticipation.

"Very much so," Truskowsky responded when asked how much people in Mahanoy City are looking forward to the fireworks. "We haven't had them for a couple of years. So it'll be great to have them back in town."

Merchlinsky and Cavenas told Eyewitness News that seeing the show will be rewarding.

"The best part is actually happening," Cavenas said. "You feel accomplished. You feel like you've done something good for the community."

"It's just a sense of pride that we were actually able to do this for our community and they'll love what's going on," Merchlinsky said.

There will be another collection at the fireworks this year in hopes of raising enough money to have the fireworks again next year.
