Downtown Alliance Hosts Planning Workshop

The core study area includes the Broad Street commercial corridor from the shopping center to Poplar Street.
Approximately 40 people participated in a strategic planning workshop
on Thursday to discuss what they see as the most critical issues and challenges facing
downtown revitalization, as well as the opportunities. The workshop was held at Luzerne
County Community College in the Broad St. Business Exchange and facilitated by Chris
Brown of Derck & Edson, whose Litiz-based urban planning and design firm has been
hired by the Alliance to lead the study. Workshop participants included representatives
of the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress board and committee members, as well
as the mayor and city council members, Penn State Hazleton, LCCC, Lehigh Valley
Health Network-Hazleton, and a variety of downtown business and property owners.

“The purpose of this workshop was to build consensus on priorities by bringing a lot of
diverse interests and perspectives to the table.” said Krista Schneider, who serves as
the Executive Director of the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress. Following an
open discussion, the participants broke down into focus groups to discuss priorities for
economic development, marketing and promotions, organization, public safety, and
physical improvements. The core study area includes the Broad Street commercial
corridor from the shopping center to Poplar Street. Particular focus is being given to the
Wyoming Street business district.

A larger public workshop is planned for July 8th, which will be open to anyone wishing to
get involved in this process. For more information or to provide recommendations
regarding the planning study, contact Ms. Schneider at 570-455-1509 or
