Stroudsburg, Monroe County – Monroe County leaders are looking for more businesses and veterans to participate in a military discount program.
Business owner Frank Scarpelli joined Monroe County’s Veteran Discount Card program when it started about a year ago. He said, "Coming from a family of veterans, I just feel you know, they served our country and why not give them a discount."
He gives veterans 10% off at Scarpelli’s Deli in Stroudsburg. "I just think it's a courtesy amongst Americans to, you know, look out for the people who are fighting for our country,” he said.
So far, about 80 Monroe County businesses have signed up. The Veterans Affairs Office would like to see more get involved. Business owners can offer any discount they would like. Veterans Affairs Director Joel Keller said, "We don't set any percentages here. That's freely their choice."
All business owners have to do is fill out an application. Then they get a discount sticker to put in the window. "We have a variety of places that are both restaurants, lawyers, medical doctors, people who repair cars and so forth,” said Keller.
Veterans who sign up for the program get a discount card that they show at participating businesses. More than 1,000 veterans have signed up. Keller noted, "I've had people as far back as World War Two right up to the present time."
