Charlie Wysocki to speak on Fighting My Battle Against Mental Illness

July 19, 2014 from 4-7 pm at the Woodlands
The Woodlands Inn (Plains, PA) will host Charlie Wysocki, the co-author of Saddle Up, Charlie: Charlie Wysocki’s Journey From Gridiron Glory Into Mental Illness, on July 19, 2014 from 4-7 pm.
Wysocki, the former Meyers High School star athlete, University of Maryland All-American running back, and long-time sufferer from bi-polar disorder will speak on his struggles and his triumphs in dealing with the horrendous personal losses he has endured and overcome in his life.
After 28 years of revolving door admissions to mental hospitals, Wysocki found himself living in a personal care home, grossly overweight and dangerously close to losing his life to unchecked diabetes.  Now, a mere five years later, he has reclaimed his life and begun a new, triumphant chapter to his story.
Following the publication of Saddle Up, Charlie, he has regained the support of friends and teammates who lost track of him after he sunk in the depths of the mental health system in the 1980s.  He has recently received training and certification from NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, to speak on the subject of mental illness, particularly bi-polar disorder. His career as a motivational speaker began this year with a series of speeches given to inmates at several prisons in the Pennsylvania Correctional System.
More recently, he as received Pennsylvania certification to serve as a Peer Support Specialist to work with mentally patients and their families.

On October 3, 2014, Wysocki will be inducted into the University of Maryland Hall of Fame, joining such luminaries as Randy White, Boomer Esiason, and Len Elmore.
Although Wysocki will discuss the glory of his youth and the horrors of his illness, his main topic is surviving, keeping the faith, and most importantly, giving back to society by helping the people who are still fighting their personal battles.
The event will begin at 4:00 pm with a meet and greet. Charlie will speak from 4:30 until 5:45 after which he will sign copies of his book for those who wish to purchase one or have brought their copy to the event.

The cost to attend is $10 and includes: all-you-can-eat hors d’oevres, one beverage (beer, wine or non-alcoholic drink), and a $2 discount on the purchase of Saddle Up, Charlie.
The Woodlands is located at 1073 Highway 315, Plains (Wilkes-Barre) PA  18702. Call 800-762-2222 for directions.
