Buddy Check June 2011: Valerie Graham's Makeover

<br>A breast cancer survivor from Carbondale was selected for a makeover by a local salon owner.

Hanover Township, Luzerne County -- This is where Valeria Graham received a new look and a new lease on life.

"I haven't felt pretty for so long," Valerie said, after seeing her new, beautiful look at Ciao Bella Salon and Studio.

In May 2009, Valerie was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer after feeling a lump in the shower.  The next ten months included chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, and radiation.  And before she could lose her hair, valerie donated 13 inches to "Locks of Love" - a group that provides wigs for children with cancer.

"That was my choise," said Valerie.  "That was something I was able to do."

It was something she could control, even if the cancer wasn't.

"My grandmother had breast cancer in 1991," said salon owner Christina Freeman.  "And she's 86 years old now."

Christina offers the W.I.N. program -- makeovers for women in transition and need.  She posted the essay contest on Craigslist.

"I selected Valerie not just based on what she had been through, but her enthusiasm and happiness she still carries within herself, like a ball of sunshine," said Christina.

"Christina has done a wonderful job. This program she did was great," said Valerie.  "I love it. I love her."
