Jackson Township, Monroe County – A local winery is toasting in celebration of an important award. Mountain View Vineyard in Monroe County won the Pocono Mountain Chamber of Commerce “Save Our Planet Award.”
Randy and Linda Rice work, and live on the vineyard property near Tannersville. "We really just feel like it's our job to take really good care of what we've been blessed with,” said Randy. So they make sure they take special care of the land. Linda said, "From the inception of our vineyard all the way to today, everything that we do here on the property is with sustainability and protecting our planet."
Randy installed geothermal vacuum tubes on the wine making building. They also use solar power. The natural energy heats the building in the winter. It also keeps the wine tanks at the right temperature. "We really like to work with nature,” smiled Randy. That includes working in the fields. Linda explained, "We don't use pesticides. We use very, very little with respect to herbicides and fungicides."
In the tasting room, they recycle bottles and packaging materials. They also recently switched to energy-efficient lighting. "Fifty watt bulbs we've replaced with four watt LEDs so we're saving on energy there,” said Linda. She added, "Everything really that we do here we have our planet in mind the whole time we're doing it."
